Our client, a Maine based community bank, is seeking its next Director of Legal and Government Affairs due to an upcoming retirement. This role serves as the Bank’s in-house counsel, responsible for providing strategic and day-to-day legal support across all departments, as well as advising senior management on a wide range of legal, regulatory, and business matters. The role has primary responsibility for legal oversight in four core areas: contract review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, commercial and residential transactional law, and employment law guidance with a heavy focus on commercial and residential loan transactional matters.
This position works closely with the executive team, external counsel, the Board of Directors, and various internal stakeholders, providing both legal advice and business guidance.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD or LLB) from an accredited law school.
- Active member in good standing with the Maine Bar.
- Minimum of 8 years of legal experience, ideally within a federally regulated financial institution or banking law practice.
- Broad knowledge and experience in corporate law, banking law, real estate law, and employment law.
- Demonstrated experience handling complex commercial transactions and regulatory matters.
- Strong background in contract review, compliance analysis, and organizational policy development.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong interpersonal and negotiation abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general legal research tools.
- Ability to work independently while contributing collaboratively in a team environment.
